The religion that we know as Hinduism today, crystallised during the time of the epics and the Puranas. Hinduism’s pantheon of gods and goddesses, its rituals of worship, festivals, myths and literature evolved to its present shape during the closing centuries before the Christian Era and the first few centuries of the next millennium. The mythology of the trinity of gods – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva and with them the Mother Goddess in her many forms is found within the two epics – the Ramayana and the Mahabharata – and the eighteen compendiums of miscellaneous writing called the Puranas.
